Here is What You'll Learn

Learning Objectives

· Explain the difference between donor-restricted funds and board-designated funds

· Record restricted gifts in a consistent way and keep documentation organized

· Track fund balances and confidently determine which resources are available to support current ministry needs

· Recognize when restrictions are satisfied and how to document a release from restriction

· Identify when endowments require extra care and what questions to ask before spending

What We'll Cover

· Donor restrictions vs. board designations (quasi-endowments): Clarify what makes a gift donor-restricted, what it means when leadership “sets aside” funds, and what notes and documentation matter.

· Recording restricted gifts and tracking restricted net assets: Discuss practical ways to record restricted gifts, organize them, and track balances so you can answer “What do we have, and what can we use?”

· Releases from restriction (timing and mechanics): Walk through common situations (purpose and time restrictions) and how to document and record when restricted funds become available.

· Endowments — what finance teams need to know: Review what an endowment is, why some endowments have special rules, and why donor-restricted and board-designated endowments are treated differently.
